Cell Solace presents hand and shoulder bags, jewelry boxes, and unique artifacts made by inmates in US prisons completely from folded woven cigarette cartons. Incarcerated men and women created the works as gifts for their loved ones between the 1940’s and 1970’s. Mass incarceration remains a major issue for black and brown communities all across America. This collection evinces that the flickers of love, creative ingenuity, and hope are not extinguished — even in the absence of freedom.
